Direct A/V recently commissioned a replacement and upgrade of the system controllers and main building amplifiers for the overhead paging system at Long Beach Memorial Hospital. This hospital is a large facility consisting of a seven-story main building, the newer multi-story Miller Children’s Hospital Wing, and separate buildings for the Outpatient Clinic (i.e. the “Buffums Building”) and MRI Imaging.
The previous headend equipment consisted of a hybrid (analogue and digital) controller and analogue power amplifiers for the main building. The upgrade consisted of new alldigital main and redundant IED controllers (series IP-108) along with new digital power amplifiers (IED series T-112) for the main building. Previously installed digital power amplifiers for the Miller Children’s Hospital, MRI Imaging, and the outpatient clinic were retained and integrated with the new headend equipment.
Extensive testing of the existing public address system was done by Direct A/V technicians prior to “cutover”. The intent in this was to minimize the duration of nonoperation during cutover to the absolute minimum for this critical medical facility. Several ground faults were located and repaired on existing speaker wiring in the main building to ensure the reliability of the new digital power amplifiers serving that area.
The new IED headend controllers and the new digital power amplifiers were energized and programmed for many weeks prior to actual cutover to “burn in,” thus assuring reliable operation when the critical cutover event took place. A new telephone paging interface was also programmed and integrated with the existing six (6) analogue telephone circuits that were previously used. Audio level adjustments on the existing analogue power amplifiers were archived and subsequently programmed into the new equipment; this provided a good “starting point” at cutover and minimized subsequent “fine tuning” volume adjustments.
Previous analogue microphone stations were also replaced at cutover in the PBX office, the front public lobby and office areas with new IED digital units.
